BRT operator introduces downward review of fare rates across corridors [DETAILS]

As part of measures to make public commuting affordable, operator of Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, Franchise in Lagos State, Primero Transport Services Limited, has concluded plans to slash the current flat rate of bus fares from Ikorodu to Tafawa Balewa Square, TBS, corridors of the state.

The new fare regime will have five percent reduction in bus fare across the routes which comprises of five zones from Ikorodu to TBS.
The Managing Director of the transport company, Mr. Deji Tinubu, who disclosed this at the weekend, explained that the new fare regime, aimed at cushioning the current economic hardship by making the bus fares affordable, as well as providing value for money to average commuter. The five zones according to Tinubu are; Ikorodu-Mile12, Mile-12-Maryland, Maryland-Fadeyi, Fadeyi-Constain and Constain-TBS
According to him, “The bus fare will now be charged based on commuting from one zone to another against the former charges of flat rate.

A passenger commuting from Ikorodu to Maryland will now pay N150 as against current charge of N200, passenger from Maryland to Fadeyi, now pay N200, against current charge of N250, and Fadeyi to Constain passenger, will now pay N250, as against current N300, while passenger from Ikorodu to TBS remain constant charge of N300.

“The new fare is alot cheaper for passengers doing shorter distances because most of the BRT passengers who are going short distances had complained of paying as much as those going long distances, hence, the need for the review of the fare which will be done according to dictates of our economy.
“We don’t control market forces, but we will continue to look for a way and adjust to make the customer happy and comfortable and improving our services.”

Tinubu, also disclosed that in order to make commuting more seamless, the planned e-ticketing is currently on test run and will be introduced to members of the public within the next 6 weeks.
Also on moves to boost its fleet, he added that the company had sent letter of intention to Lagos State Government on the bid to operate on the new Abule-Egba to Oshodi BRT corridor, which is currently under construction.
Tinubu said about 300 buses will be injected to operate along the new corridor alone when completed, adding that currently, 434 buses are operation along Ikorodu-TBS corridor, “we record about 160 passengers commuting daily.”
