The pathetic story of how 14-year-old Ese Oruru, who was in August 2015, allegedly abducted in Opolo, Yenagoa Local Government Area of Bayelsa State, by one Yunusa, who hails from Kano, has continued to elicit outrage on social media among Nigerians. Source gathered that Ese, who was 13 as at the time of her alleged abduction, was taken to Kano, by Yunusa, where he converted her to Islam and married her. Ese’s parents had since last August made trips to Kano, where they unraveled the plights of their daughter. The parents said they have involved the police, but efforts to get the Emir of Kano, Mallam Lamido Sanusi, at whose palace the girl is believed to be held to resolve the matter and ensure the return of the 14-year-old to them have proved futile. Anene Otasi at LUTH after suffering gun shot wounds at Ladipo market For the past one week, there has been tension and violence at Odo-Aladura section of Ladipo motor spare parts market following a failed attempt to demolish over 2,000 shops in the market in Mushin, Lagos State, western Nigeria. Fracas broke out at the market after hundreds of thugs invaded the market with arms and two caterpillars and attacked the traders and attempted to demolish shops there. The traders who were caught unawares fought back the thugs and chased them away after many were injured on both sides. source gathered that the thugs were allegedly led by a man well known to the traders. During the fracas many traders including the thugs sustained injuries and are in several hospitals in Lagos receiving treatment. One person has been confirmed dead as traders at the Ladipo Market, Oshodi, Lagos, on Thursday protested against alleged extortion by one Monday Ijoba. It was learnt that Ijoba and his gang members were reportedly employed by the local government authority in the area to collect charges from the traders. Displaying placards which read, “Monday, enough is enough”, among others, the traders chanted war songs. The market is dominated by Igbo, who sell spare parts and electronics, among others. It was learnt that policemen and soldiers mobilised to the scene, but some of the protesters reportedly fired gunshots to chase them away. PUNCH Metro gathered that a trader, whose identity had yet to be identified, was hit by a stray bullet and died, while others were injured. Yoruba genetically immune to Lassa fever virus - Professor

A university lecturer, Prof. Christian Happi, has claimed that Yoruba people, by the make-up of their genes, are immune to Lassa virus that causes Lassa fever. The researcher, who is Dean, College of Postgraduate Studies, Department of Biological Sciences, Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, said research was ongoing on why this is so, adding that few cases of Lassa fever recorded among Yoruba people are “imported.” Speaking on the new breakthrough on the rampaging Lassa fever, Happi, who is Director, World Funded African Centre of Excellence for Genomics of Infectious Diseases, ACEGID, while speaking in Ede, said Lassa fever virus originated from Nigeria about 1,060 years ago. He further explained that the disease spread to other West African countries about 400 years ago, stressing that Yoruba have capacity to resist the virus more than any other ethnic group in country.
