An Open Letter To President Muhammadu Buhari By Chinedu (Chinex) Obue [MUST READ]

His Excellency.Muhammadu Buhari (GCFR).President Federal Republic of Nigeria.

                                       STATE OF THE NATION

Mr. President Sir, I wish to first congratulate you on your election victory, which came as a surprise to many, as never in the history of our democracy that opposition party defeat the incumbent at the national level. This has clearly shown the rest of the world the level which we have gone in the democratic system of governance.
The main reason for writing this letter Mr. President is to intimate you how badly things have gone ever since you took office. Things have gone so bad that people are finding it extremely hard to feed. We know things were not going too well before you became President, which was why Nigerians came out in-mass to vote for you. But today things have gone so bad that even those that were shouting “sai Baba sai Buhari” before the election have all gone quiet in disappointment.

Mr. President Sir, as bad as things may look right now there are still ways which you can turn them around. Given the economic hardship we are facing now there is need for us to shift our attention away from oil. We need to diversify our economy as oil alone can no longer sustain us. Nigeria is a country blessed with abundant mineral resources so we must look elsewhere in order to complement what we get from the sale of crude oil. State governments must be involved in the exploration and the exploitation of our different mineral resources we have in abundance in different states.

If we really want our economy to grow rapidly, the different state governments must be allowed to manage the mineral resources in their various areas of jurisdiction, and by the end of every month 25% of whatever is realized should be paid into the federation account. If this is done, the attention will be shifted from oil as not all the state of the federation can boast of oil. That way every state will have to focus on what they can produce to sustain their economy as the usual monthly allocation from the federation account will no longer be coming. State that is rich in the production of rice will now focus on it, the one that is rich in coco production will focus on it, the one that is rich in cassava production will focus on it, etc. that way it will bring healthy competition among states as every state will now focus on their comparative advantage and that way our economy will grow. The oil producing state governments can even build refineries in their various states. The federal government will then serve as a regulatory agency to regulate the activities of states in order to strike a balance between the states and the federal government.

If all these measures are taken within a short period of time our economy will bounce back and Nigerians will be entirely grateful to you Mr. President. Your name will be in the history book as a President that led Nigeria out of a difficult moment.
Another issue I want you to look into Mr. President is local government autonomy. It is no longer news that local government which supposed to be the third-tier government at the local level has been hijacked by various state governments which therefore make them incapacitated in carrying out their functions. I am using this opportunity to call on you Mr. President to find a way which local governments can be granted autonomy in order for them to carry out their functions without any fear or favor.

On the issue of power, state governments should be given authority to generate electricity for their states alongside the private sector in order to boast our electricity supply and create competition in the industry.

If all these suggestions I gave on this letter are carried out I believe Nigeria will be on the right part. I implore you Mr. President to put all these suggestions into consideration and save this country. Save the citizens whose votes were responsible for your emergence as President. Nigerians have suffered so much on the account of bad leadership and greedy politicians; they do not deserve to suffer any more. Please Mr. President, do all you can to give us the country of our dreams as Nigerians are strongly behind you.

Yours Faithfully,

Chinedu (Chinex) Obue
