Liberian Minister Sebastian Muah Omar, who approved late Patrick Sawyer's trip to Nigeria has angrily reacted after he was criticized for letting Sawyer, a staff of the Liberian government, leave Liberia for Nigeria despite Liberian health officials placing him on Ebola danger list. Policemen and some members of the Oodu’a Peoples Congress (OPC) engaged suspected Niger Delta militants in a gun battle in Ewedogbon, a riverine community in Igando-Ikotun local council development area of Lagos, on Tuesday. The exchange of gunfire, which lasted for hours, created tension in the community and forced residents to abandon their homes even after the gun battle had subsided. Residents said the militants stormed the community on Sunday evening, but only kidnapped a woman, who was returned around 3am on Tuesday. The victim was believed to have been raped, since she was freed without any demand for ransom. “There has been tension since they kidnapped a young lady from this area on Sunday night,” a landlord in the area, who refused to disclose his identity, said. “We just noticed strange movements on that particular day, and we had been suspecting that they would return anytime soon. Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State, Tuesday, signed a bill into law converting the Lagos State University, LASU, Ojo, to a residential institution, as well as approving 70 years retirement age for professors of the institution. The law, LASU (Amendment) Bill 2015, also approved a five-year single term for the Vice Chancellor of the institution. Over the last few years, there has been a running battle between the institution’s chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, with the immediate-past Vice Chancellor, Prof. John Obafunwa, over demands that the school approves 70 years as retirement age for professors, single term of five years for Vice Chancellor, among others. Signing the bill into law at the State House, Ikeja, Lagos, Southwest Nigeria on Tuesday, Ambode said the amended law is aimed at raising the standard of the school to an enviable position and a school that people would be proud of.
