A 25-year-old security guard, Zakarayu Kasumi, is in jail for cutting off the arm of a suspected thief identified as Mr. Adekunle Popoola. The incident happened at Adepeju area of Akowonjo in Shasha, Lagos State. Kasumi who was employed as a night guard said while patrolling the area he saw Popoola around 3am as he was sneaking into another resident’s house and he moved to stop him. He said when he got there with his cutlass, Popoola attacked him and he used the cutlass he had to cut off his arm. Security guard The Kano State indigene said that when the residents came out and saw that it was Popoola who is also a resident of the community, they blamed him but did not ask Popoola what he was doing outside at that time. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has warned the public to shun consumption of fruits ripened with calcium carbide. The agency gave the warning on Monday in Abuja in a statement signed by its management, saying that dangerous effects of carbide-ripened fruits include cancer and other illnesses. According to the management, consuming such fruits can also cause heart, kidney and liver failure. “NAFDAC hereby warns farmers and the general public against the dangers of using calcium carbide for ripening fruits such as banana, mango, plantain, orange and cashew,” the management said. On how to identify carbide-ripened fruits, the management said that “naturally ripened fruits usually have brown or black spots while those artificially ripened have traces of powdery substances and peel off quickly’’.   Russian businessman Sergei Mavrodi, whose MMM pyramid scheme deprived millions of Russians of their savings in the 1990s, has died of a heart attack, according to Russia media. Reports said the 62-year-old was rushed to the hospital late on March 25 with pain in his chest and died several hours later. Mavrodi's MMM financial pyramid was a typical Ponzi scheme in which earlier investors receive their profits from subsequent investors. Mavrodi promised returns of 20 percent to 75 percent a month, as well as lotteries and bonuses for investors. An air raid on a rebel-held area of northwestern Syria killed 20 people including 16 children fleeing an earlier strike on a school, rescue workers said Wednesday. The Syrian Civil Defense rescue service, which operates in opposition areas, said the air raid took place in the village of Kafr Batikh in the eastern part of Idlib province Wednesday. A war monitor, the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, gave the same number of dead and said that 15 were from one family. Idlib is the largest, most populous area still held by rebels seeking to oust Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, whose forces are backed in the war by Russian air power. Assad and his allies are also attacking rebels in eastern Ghouta, near Damascus, in an offensive that has involved intense bombardment. He added that 140 people involved in the incident had been rushed to hospital and district health centres, but many had already been discharged. "Doctors say that only three of them are in critical condition but they are getting better," he said. France plans to fix the legal age of sexual consent as 15, meaning sex with someone younger than that would be considered rape. Equality Minister Marlène Schiappa welcomed the move, which follows advice from doctors and legal experts. Currently, prosecutors must prove sex with someone under 15 was forced in order to bring rape charges. The change comes amid uproar over two recent cases of men accused of having sex with 11-year-old girls. Under the existing legislation, if there is no violence or coercion proved, offenders may only be charged with sexual abuse of a minor and not rape. This has a maximum sentence of five years in prison and a fine of €75,000 (£66,000; $87,000). Sentences are the same for sexual assaults of minors and non-minors, but rape convictions carry much harsher punishments.
